The short answer

  • Staying at Uma Valley? Your airport pick-up and drop-off are free. Send us your flight details and one of us will meet you at Hat Yai International Airport (HDY).
  • Distance: about 14 km / 10 minutes from the airport and 15–20 km from Hat Yai city centre.
  • Location: Tha Pho, Sadao district, Songkhla — the green countryside south-west of Hat Yai, on the side of the city that faces the Malaysian border.

From Hat Yai International Airport (HDY)

Hat Yai’s airport is small and easy. After you collect your bags you walk straight out into the arrivals hall.

If you are our guest, simply look for us at arrivals — we will have agreed the meeting point with you by message. The drive to Uma Valley takes about ten minutes.

If you are going into Hat Yai city first, these are the usual options (prices are approximate and change from time to time):

Option Typical price Notes
Airport taxi (counter in the terminal) around 250 THB per car Fixed fare to the city, about 20–30 minutes
Shared minivan about 60–100 THB per person Leaves when full; can take 40–60 minutes with stops
Grab (ride-hailing app) roughly 180–300 THB Needs mobile data; fares vary with demand

Tip: Hat Yai’s airport is about 9–15 km from the city depending on where your hotel is. Allow at least 30 minutes for the trip back to the airport, more in the evening rush hour.

From Hat Yai city

Uma Valley is roughly 15–20 km from the centre of Hat Yai. A Grab or taxi is the easiest way to reach us. If you are already staying with us and want to spend an evening at the night markets, we can arrange a car with driver on request, so you do not have to worry about finding a ride back.

From Malaysia

Most visitors to Hat Yai come from Malaysia and Singapore, and Uma Valley sits on the Sadao side of Hat Yai — the side closest to the border.

By car or van through Danok / Bukit Kayu Hitam

The Danok (Sadao) – Bukit Kayu Hitam checkpoint is the busiest land crossing between Thailand and Malaysia, linking Malaysia’s North–South Expressway with Thailand’s Highway 4. Minivans from Penang to Hat Yai take about 3.5–4.5 hours including immigration on both sides. If you are driving yourself, Uma Valley is a short detour before you reach Hat Yai city — we will send you a map pin when you book.

By train through Padang Besar

There is no longer a direct Kuala Lumpur–Hat Yai train. The usual route is the KTM ETS train to Padang Besar, then the Thai shuttle train to Hat Yai (about 45–55 minutes). Good news for our guests: this shuttle stops at Khlong Ngae, the station about 7 km from Uma Valley. Timetables change, so check the current schedule before you travel and tell us your train — we will arrange the pick-up.

On some long weekends and school holidays, KTMB also runs the seasonal MySawasdee sleeper train from KL Sentral to Hat Yai. Check KTMB for current dates.

From Bangkok

  • By plane: the fastest way. Several airlines fly from Bangkok (Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi) to Hat Yai International Airport in about 1.5 hours — and your transfer to Uma Valley is then just ten minutes.
  • By overnight train: sleeper trains from Bangkok’s Krung Thep Aphiwat station reach Hat Yai Junction in roughly 14–16 hours. It is a classic way to travel south; we can collect you from the station.

Getting around during your stay

Uma Valley is a rural place — that is what makes it so quiet. Public transport does not reach our road, so most guests either:

  • use our car with driver (on request) for days out to Hat Yai, the markets, waterfalls, Songkhla, or Pak Bara pier for Koh Lipe;
  • book a Grab from the house to the city; or
  • rent a car at the airport, with free parking next to the house.

Whatever you choose, tell us your plans — we love helping guests make the most of Southern Thailand.
