Where to stay

Where to stay in Hat Yai: city centre, near the airport or in nature?

Hat Yai has hundreds of hotels, apartments and homestays. The right choice depends less on the hotel and more on the area — and on what kind of trip you want. Here is an honest overview from two local hosts, including when our own place is not the best fit.

Three ways to stay in Hat Yai

Area Best for Keep in mind
City centre (around the markets and Hat Yai Junction) Shopping, night markets, street food, first-time visitors without a car Busy and noisy; traffic in the evenings and on weekends
Near the airport Early flights and one-night stopovers Fewer restaurants within walking distance
Countryside around Hat Yai (e.g. Sadao district) Rest, nature, families, couples, travellers with pets, longer stays You need a car, Grab or a driver to reach the city

Staying in the city centre

Most visitors from Malaysia and Singapore stay in central Hat Yai, and for a short shopping or food weekend it makes sense. Everything is close: the ASEAN Night Bazaar, the Kim Yong and Santisuk markets, dim sum breakfasts and Hat Yai fried chicken. The downside is the noise and the traffic — Hat Yai is a lively commercial city, especially on weekends and holidays.

Choose the centre if: you are here for two or three days of shopping and eating, and you do not plan to drive.

Staying near the airport

Hat Yai International Airport (HDY) is about 9–15 km from the city centre. Staying close to it is practical if you have a very early flight or only one night before continuing to the islands.

Choose the airport area if: you are in transit, or you plan to leave early for Pak Bara and Koh Lipe.

Staying in nature, outside the city

This is where we live. The countryside around Hat Yai is green and quiet — rubber plantations, coconut palms and hills — yet still close to everything. A nature stay suits you if you want to rest between busy days, travel with children or a dog, or simply wake up to birdsong instead of traffic.

Uma Valley Homestay: what to expect

  • A 10,000 m² tropical estate with a lotus lake, a small waterfall, an open-air sala and coconut palms — and a private 300 m² garden around your house.
  • About 10 minutes from Hat Yai Airport (around 14 km), with free airport pick-up and drop-off.
  • Breakfast included every morning, served by the lake or on your terrace; lunch and dinner on request.
  • Pets stay free.
  • Hosts who speak English, Italian and Thai, and a car with driver on request for day trips.

When Uma Valley is not the right choice

We would rather you are happy than booked with us at any price. Uma Valley is probably not for you if you want to walk to the night markets every evening, if you are a group of more than four people, or if you are looking for a pool, a spa or hotel nightlife. In those cases the city centre will suit you better.

How to decide in one minute

  • First time, no car, here to shop and eat? → City centre.
  • One night before an early flight? → Near the airport.
  • Want rest, nature, space for the kids or the dog — and still be 10 minutes from the airport? → A countryside homestay like Uma Valley.
