The route in short
- Hat Yai → Pak Bara pier (La-ngu, Satun province): about 120 km, 2 to 2.5 hours by road.
- Pak Bara → Koh Lipe by speedboat: about 1 hour 15 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the sea.
Door to door, plan for 3 to 5.5 hours.
Option 1: combined van + speedboat ticket
The most popular choice. Several operators sell a joint ticket that includes a minivan from Hat Yai (some depart from Hat Yai airport) to Pak Bara and the speedboat to Lipe. Typical prices are around 800–950 THB per person. Morning departures are usual so that you catch a midday boat.
Good for: solo travellers and couples on a budget. Keep in mind: the van stops for other passengers, and if your flight is delayed you may miss the connection.
Option 2: private driver to Pak Bara + speedboat
If you are a family or a small group, or you simply want to travel at your own pace, a private car to Pak Bara is more comfortable — you leave when you want, stop for lunch, and go straight to the pier. Then buy your speedboat ticket (roughly 600–700 THB one way) at the pier or in advance.
Guests of Uma Valley can book our car with driver to Pak Bara. One of our guests wrote that we even drove them the two hours to Pak Bara after picking them up at the airport — it is a trip we know well.
When to go
- High season (about mid-October to May): more boats, calmer seas, and extra routes such as boats from Langkawi.
- Low season (about May to October): Pak Bara is the only route that runs all year, but there are fewer departures and the sea can be rough. Keep a spare day in your plans.
A relaxed way to do it: stay a night near Hat Yai first
Long flights, an early van and a speedboat on the same day can be tiring. Many of our guests arrive in Hat Yai, spend a night or two in the quiet of Uma Valley — 10 minutes from the airport, with free pick-up — and leave rested for the islands the next morning. Coming back, it is a peaceful last stop before your flight home.
Quick checklist
- Book boats in advance in peak periods (Thai and Malaysian holidays, New Year).
- Bring cash: Koh Lipe has ATMs, but they can run out on busy weekends.
- Check the latest boat schedule a day before you travel — times change with the season and the weather.
- Pack light: you walk from the boat to the beach, sometimes through shallow water.
